Simple:
Assume you're downshifting. Upshifting goes pretty easy right? Especially into 4th.
Consider it an audio thing. Here's the excercise. You're going from fourth to third at 20 mph. Run it at 20 mph in third for a while and try to feel and hear and memorize what the sound of the engine is.
Now driving in 4th, slowing down, take it out of 4th, let the clutch out and speed the engine up to that sound pitch you hopefully remembered. Gas off clutch in, and that lever should go into 3rd like magic. Ya gotta do it fairly quickly as road speed bleeds off fast on these things. Over revving it gives the same grinding as not enough revs.
The memory equation is "what would the engine be turning at speed x in the next lower gear".
Let us know if we have sufficiently confused you. If not, we will re post until you think you are a total idiot and want an automatic. Of course I NEVER grind a gear in my '48!!! The last time I stopped at Frank Irons house I think I scared the neighbor kid going into third gear while leaving.
Now go drain the metal filings out of the trans oil, fill er back up and have fun.
