Gas tank question...

It seems as if theres two different types of gas tanks looking at the sending units on the flatfender. What are the differences and are they interchangeable? My '53 B3PW tank split and I have a good spare tank, but the sending unit looks like a two wire job, where as the one that is split is a one wire.
