tires 17 - 7.5 tube type widow makers????

hello hello

my 66 w200 has these beautiful big tires, but the treads are nearly gone. the guy in the tire shop called them widow makers(i'm not even married) and says no one will work on them.
is my only option new rims 16.5 8 bolt and new rubber. his soloution was $2500CDN (or about $500US) but i am hoping someone has a better idea.
