If you see a bid under the reserve it means that bid is not a proxy bid. They just bid that amount. But you are right the proxy bid is the answer. A proxy bid will take the bid over the reserve by the bidding increment if the proxy bid is over the reserve. It's a great way to bid. You decide how much you are willing to go on your bidding and bid that amount. Your bid will only go to the next increment of the last bid. You don't have to watch the auction all the time.
