Sick feeling in my stomach?????

First I am not a mechanic, so over look my ignorance.
I bought a 87 Power Ram 4x4 with a 318 and auto. for $500. The guy I bought it from said it had been running, but the starter went out. The new starter he bought would not ingage, it would just spin when you turned the key. I thought maybe it was the wrong starter or the fly wheel might have a broken tooth.
The bad news! I took the starter off to check it and the fly wheel. The fly wheel doesn't have any broken teeth, but I was able to rotate the fly wheel back and forth real easy with no sign of the motor turning.
To me this seems like a bad sign, what do you think?
