Doug, Mopar actually built the flattie 6's to 413 C.I.D. (4.0625 stroke by 5.3125 bore, 171 horses, 343 FP of torque in '55 and '56)The 6's were available with automatics, specifically powerflites (2 speed auto) and the dual range fluid drive (a two speed stick with a two speed auto, fluid converter linked to a clutch and an all around AWFUL trans), with the fluid drive being available up until about '53 and the powerflite thereafter. I have an engine that came out of a '55 Dodge Coronet that had a powerflite behind it and a factory 2 barrel manifold, which I sold to another dodge'er. I can check but I think the powerflite was an option behind the 6's up to '59 (at least) and anything a powerflite would bolt to, a cast iron torqueflite will bolt as they use the same bolt-on bellhousings and torque converters. This one was buckled to the flattie via the ubuquitous aluminum adaptor plate discussed in earlier posts. (and yes, I am looking for another plate). The torqueflite is just a few inches longer than the powerflite. The cast iron torqeflites are good because they are readily rebuildable and they had a rear pump so that they could be push-started plus you can bolt them and their converters, to virtually EVERY mopar made from the 217 clear to the 440.
