OK, I know that this has been talked about recently, but I just can't seem to find the thread and I need some help...
I managed to get my early series transmission stuck in 3rd gear yesterday.
I pulled the shift cover today and about all I can tell looking at it is that the latch plunger washer on the reverse shift rail lug assembly (the c-clip) was about halfway off the plunger. I popped it back in place whith a screwdriver, but it sipped most of the way off again when I went to working the shift lever while the cover was clamped onto the workbench. It also appears that the ball at the top of the tower is worn, but I have not removed it to see what is actually going on.
The gears look ok to my untrained eye, and I cannot see that anything has fallen out of the top into the sump or broken loose internally.
The military media cd rom has the transmission manual (TN 9-2520-232-35), but it covers the later model transmission (the NP420) and not the early one, and some of the photos are pretty bad, so I thought I'd ask for advice here...
PS: A Cummins 4BT will pull a M37 from a dead stop up a 5% hill even though it has 4.89 gears, but you have to slip the clutch a bit...
Thanks,
