factory hole in dash what went there

I looked at a power wagon (flat fender) that has a hole cut in the dash to the right of the speedo and even with the top of the speedo and was wondering what went there. this truck has a heater also. the hole is about 2 x 3 inches. this truck is a 1951 to 1957 model not sure. dave
