That might be the case - old vs. new. Although I have to say, I've loaded my 1990 F-150 with over 2500 lbs of gravel, sand or other stuff many times and not had any trouble. But sometimes I think the older trucks had a little more meat in them than the newer ones. New ones are trying for gas mileage, comfort, etc., and they may not have as much metal in the frames, axles, etc. It's hard to say.
