From reading things over the years, I seem to recall the "General Purpose" acronym (the military loooooves a good acronym!) and General Purpose was written 'GP', pronounced "Geep" or Jeep. Early (pre-WWII) years GP was used for more than just vehicles before Ford and Willys got their contracts. A 'GP Medium' was the medium sized tent used in the field. A 'GP small' was the smaller tent for the officers. We called our pup-tents 'GP Tinyies'! Read that somewhere years ago. Anyone else??
