How to tell if your brakes have Dot 5 ?

I had new front wheel cylinders installed in January. According to the invoice, they "flushed" the brake system and bled it. I asked what fluid they used, and the counterman/owner said DOT 5.

How can I tell for sure they did use DOT 5? What happens if I add DOT 5 and it turns out they didn't?
