CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!!??

I was hoping you could help me with this question of mine. I have run across a transfercase that has me stumped! I pulled the transfercase out of a 1976 Dodge W-200, and I am sure it is a NP205 because of the small round 3-bolt cover over the intermediate shaft. However what has me stumped is the shifter, it has 5 different positions like this; 4 low lock, 4 low, Neutral, 4 high, 4 high lock. My main question is what are the locks for?
