brake boosters

Just how good are they? I have one on my 54 C1. How do i check it ,with out driving the truck? I am going over the lines and brakes . If the booster is no good I want to weigh my options now .I may consider front disc brakes instead of a rebuilt booster if they really dont work well. What have you guys done?
