You may have run into the same problem I did. My alternator would not charge/turn on until 4000 alternator RPM. Alternator and engine RPM are different due to the pully sizes. My battery was always dead. The shop replaced the stator in mine and now it kicks in at 800 RMP engine speed which is just above idle. It cost me $38 to have them replace it and the regulator. The problem with using the other single wire that excites off the batter is that you can drain the battery if the vehicle is not used that often as the charging circuit is always on.
