I just did this on a forklift. Should be similar to a tractor. You don't need a very high output alt. I got mine at Autozone, I looked through the computer until I found the least expensive internal regulator model available. I don't have the number but it was for a nova/chevy 2 with a four cylinder. The cost was only $23 plus a $6 core. I stuck a balast resistor on the coil feed and that was it. No lights to worry about on the forklift. Gages were all mechanical.
