Don't solve this problem with a Hi-lift jack. They are a great thing, and I have thought about buying one for, oh.... say 25-30 years, but I never have yet.
If you are working on your truck, get a floor jack. If you can't afford a good new one, then look for a used one, preferable a 4 ton model. Not because you need to lift 8,000 lb. at one lifting point, but because it will have a greater range of motion. Also, get jack stands that are about as tall as you can handle, and they will have a high load capacity rating. Or, maybe you have a friend who can weld you up a set of super duty stands. You must have excellent jack stands for this work.
I am with the other fellow.... if you can't do the floor jack, then get a BIG bottle jack, 12 ton or better. You can gather up lots of big dimension blocks, pieces of 6x6, and stuff with even larger dimensions. It will be slow, but it can be very safe.
Plus, you can be working on things that your Hi-lift won't be able to get a hold of.
In case I have not been really clear here, forget this Hi-lift jack. If you are married or have a girlfriend, get her support in buying the right thing in terms of it saving your life and your limbs for her future enjoyment.
