VIN Number Locations

Went thru Joe's CD of forums, and found many messages which disagree about the VIN number locations on the frame. Any one sure about which side the numbers are on? Passenger side right behind the shock mount? Or drivers side, right behind the shock mount? Also, what size numbers am I looking for? I thought I read one half inch height somewhere....
