You want to rock the idler gear back & forth not the counter gear. You do this by rotating the pto drive shaft back & forth ( be sure to engage the pto!) while keeping you hand on the tranny counter gear to "FEEL" ( There said it again) the contact between the two gears. Don't go by what you feel with the pto drive shaft as it will be making contact with a intermediate pto gear.
