you should experiment with another spring to see if you can do it yourself.
I understand that you could get a 6-8" piece
of pipe, and weld it to a heavy base, horizontally.
Then you strike the spring starting at one end, move it 8-10 inches and strike it again, working your way to the other end.
You could lay the spring out on a piece of plywood, cardboard, etc., with the spring on its side. Outline it with a pencil, then compare it after you re-arch it to see what happens. It can be done. You are supposed to only strike each section one time, not too soft and not too hard.
