I really like the AFB, but since your question was driveability, here goes; The AVS is smoother and more tunable than the AFB. The AFB may be too much carb for the 318, the AVS would be more suitable for economy since it has air-valve controlled secondaries, but they are both mechanical choke carbs and that may be a drawback for you, I actually like being able to use my choke knob on the dash! However later model Eldebrock (9000 series) which are AFB knock-offs have electric chokes which will actually fit on that old AVS.
