I worked at General Motors in the Experimental Assembly department, from 1984 - 1997. I remember when GM took the V-8 engine and made it into a production diesel. The problem was that it broke a lot of crankshafts, and they had to take it out of production because of that. I think there was also a problem with the block, that 4-bolt mains stood up better than 2-bolt mains. Anyway, GM continued building the V-6 diesel, but this engine was built from the ground up as a diesel, and you could tell just by looking at the components that it was a lot heavier-duty than a gas V-6. If it were me, I would not convert a flathead to diesel. It would be a lot of work for an engine that is almost gauranteed to blow up.
