Funny thing is, those NATO cans are not a newer design. It is the WWII German can design. Hey, where do you think the term "Gerry" can came from. Yes, they are much better than the US style. They don't leak, they are easy to pour out of, you can open them with one hand without pliers, and most importantly to me, they don't "implode" due to temperature swings. When you get the US style to actually not leak, they suck in on themselves after being heated in the sun during the day and then cooled off at night. We get pretty good temp swings here and it has happened to every US style can I've had.
I actually had gas boil in one of my cans. You know when you open them you let that air out? Well, it just kept on coming and coming and coming so I finally just opened it. It was literally boiling and continued to do so for several minutes.
