That's pretty much what I had in mind, Ed. My only concern is getting something beefy enough to take up to 10,000# and still be easily removable without messing up the pintle hitch mounts. My latest thought (that's scary) is making a receiver in 2 pieces so that the 2-inch ID square tubing of the receiver nests inside of a piece of larger square tubing welded to a heavy plate, which bolts to the backside of the crossmember. The front portion would also be welded to a heavy plate that bolts to the front of the crossmember. Simply use a hitch pin to connect the front piece to the rear piece and bolt the plates to the crossmembers. I believe this would give the unit enough strength for loads up to 10,000#.
