Starter Grind

Since I converted my flatfender to 12v, my starter will sometimes grind loudly when attempting to engage the flywheel. Has this happened to anyone else, and is this happening because the gear on the starter is spinning too fast when moving in to engage the flywheel? Thanks for any responses.
