This 1954 photograph depicts a mobile unit for "Project Sky Fire," a U.S. Forest Service research initiative aimed at seeding thunderstorms to prevent lightning-caused wildfires.

The research was conducted near Gisborne Mountain Lookout and the Priest River Experimental Forest in Idaho.

The mobile unit itself is a modified truck equipped with atmospheric monitoring instruments to study the relationship between thunderclouds and lightning.
