I disconnect the ground (positive to engine block) first. That way if my wrench contacts metal while removing the negative, I don't get fireworks. Hook back up in reverse order.
Honestly, I do not repolarize the generator every time I reconnect a battery. I only do that if I have the generator or regulator out of the truck for some reason. I have never had a problem with that method.
For attaching a battery tender, first disconnect both battery cables from the battery posts and hook up the tender clamps red to the positive post and black to the negative post.
If the truck had ever been converted to a negative ground (either 6 or 12 volt) the wires on the back on the ammeter were probably reversed to correctly show the charging state. If converting back to positive ground, the wires will have to be reversed back to factory on the ammeter.
