I believe all the trucks and car frames were Chromoly, cold pressed into shape for strength. A soft frame would not hold up.
Most of the FFPW cranks occurred from carrying heavy loads. If you look at your FFPW data plate and if it shows 9500 pounds as the GVW, then you can plan on a load of 2 tons on the road, 1 ton off road. Most farmers/ranchers/construction and other companies carried those loads on/off road resulting in cracks at the spring mount areas of the frame. The further back the load is placed to the rear of the frame the more stress at the mount points. Frequently carrying loads like the image at the link will definitely cause frame stress cracks.
