Dad and my Uncle were in a "Ready 424th" 8-inch howitzer gun crew in Korea. He related the same thing. He said they started out with all worn out WWII trucks and Jeeps. Then it got worse.
The new M211 deuce and a half trucks arrived with the Hydra-matic automatic transmissions with their inherent problems. He said they were terrible for towing the howitzers up and down the steep hills in Korea as they were forever shifting and in the wrong gear.
