I am with Keith on this one. Keep all latches disconnected during adjustments.
You will also want your radiator tie rods in place. These can tilt the radiator forward or rearward to open or close the gap between the hood and the firewall and radiator cowl. They can also assure that the radiator cowl and firewall are parallel to each other. They can also effect the side-to side tilt of the radiator until you get the correct washers underneath.
The rods do not have to be tight, just in place and use the nuts to get fine adjustment as you go.
