I've never owned an M37, but I know how the 230 flathead works in the PWs I have owned. I don't see any need for anything different as far as the engine is concerned. Of course a 4 BT would be nice, but lots of work and money.
I converted my 6 volt WDX to 12 volt for practicality, and that's what I would recommmend for your 24 volt M37. You'll never be unhappy with 12 volts and the things you need for it are easier to find.
