Funny enough I have done the same thing when installing screws.
On the interior of my carryall I use #8 stainless screws on the shifters boots, kick and door panels. Much of the oak window surrounds use #8 flat heads in the white oak window surrounds.
Shifter boot bezels - #8 stainless oval head
Door Panels - #8 stainless with finishing washers.
Threads are tapped using a #8 steel screw - finished with a stainles screw - lubricated to aid in installation and preventing rust.
