When I installed the Industrial Products All-Trac positive locking differential in the rear axle of my WDX, many years ago, the instructions recommended replacing the fiber washers with brass washers. It explained that the heating of the case, in order to separate it, could damage the fiber washers. My case had been apart once before in its lifetime and I did not have to heat it as nearly as much as suggested. I did not replace the fiber washers. They appeared almost new as they had probably been replaced during the prior rebuild. They have lasted for 40 years now with no problems encountered.
