Make two sticks with cemnter lines
place one at the front
place one at the rear of the engine
Then use a straight edge or square to check the front in relation to the crank
Do the same at the back of the engine or transmission (easier with the transmission)
it is fine to have the engine offset - as long as the offset is the same in relation to the center line.
