While welding and grinding on my WC-53 Dodge Carryall this evening sparks ignited some shop towels behind me. With my welding helmet on and the radio going I didn't see, feel, smell, or hear anything behind me till the smoke detector sounded. The flames were only 6" high but you never saw a 75 year old guy run so fast across the garage, pull the pin on my fire extinguisher and in 15 seconds put out the fire. I opened the windows and turned on the fans to remove the smoke and now only have to clean up the white residue from the extinguisher. It is a bit embarrassing to relay my stupid mistake but I wanted to remind everyone on this forum to make sure you have adequate fire warning and suppression equipment in your work area. Be safe.
