A fully charged old-style, 6V, flooded lead-acid battery should be between 6.3 - 6.4 volts when fully charged. (charge, then let it rest overnight)
6.1V is considered about 50% charged. The general recommendation is not to discharge below that point - doing so tends to shorten battery life.
5.8V is considered "fully discharged" or 0% charge.
If you are down around 4 V, you have a battery problem. MAYBE it can be recovered with a battery charger (recommend a smart charger with a desulfating feature). It could take a *LONG* time for the delufation to happen. There is a good chance that you have a bad cell in that battery. There is really no good recovery from that.
I'd suggest starting from a known good battery. Too many flaky things can happen with a weak or faulty battery.
