Been there done that! My 56 truck was owned by a water district that used it for spraying diesel fuel on weeds along ditch banks. They modified the bed by cutting the side skid rails where the cross rails were to lower the side bed panels below the coss rails to install a 3/8 plate of steel to set the tank on. Well, that resulted in the gas tank filler tube having a downward angle causing a slow fill at the pump. When I redid the bed, I used peices of old 1/4 inch flat belting under the bed cross rails primarily to prevent wear between the frame and rail, then 5/8 inch thick boards on top of the rail, and 1/8 inch tank steel for the bed bottom to get the bed side panels high enough for an upward angle of the gas tank filler tube. Now I can fill the tank quicker by also angling the gas nossel upward a little when filling. You just need to get that upward angle on the filling tube. Also if you want to install a locking gas cap, the PIF's tip section has procedures to do that by modifying the filler tube. A lot of great work getting the beast back together! :=)
