If you connect the heater hose to the small pipe on the pump, isn't that the pressure side that will force coolant to the heater? Do you have a pipe outlet at the rear of the engine where you can install the type of valve in the image at the link?
If you use the water outlet with the by-pass, once the engine is at operating temp, it will close off the by-pass and you won't have coolant going to the heater. You probably need to use the C-1662497 that doesn't have the by-pass.
