I don't know how many people I have recommended they take the plugs out and flush the system... I know that everyone who has taken the advice has been very surprised at how much junk is in there. Some of the stuff looks like casting flash, which also tells me that the engines were not flushed if they were rebuilt.
I used CLR to clean a radiator recently and after about 10 mins with some temperature the water looked like mud. What you can see of the tubes are now very clean. I imagine the block looks similar, not shiny new, but clean.
