Have you tried placing a piece of copper behind the holes you are welding up? The weld wont stick to the copper. I have used this method a lot and it works good if the metal is thick enough to weld to. I have some 1/4 inch thick pieces that work well, but thinner stuff will work. Don't hold on to it, cause it gets hot real quick.
