I find that going through the list of simple solutions often fixes a problem quickly. These are not necessarily the cheapest solutions, but often times they are.
For example, I check spark plugs before I start messing with the distributor. I check fuel filters before I start pulling fuel pumps or carburetors. Doing the simple checks removes them from later scenarios, and often give clues about what is happening upstream (spark plug condition, crud in the fuel filter, etc).
That's just how I roll.
