in my experience of rebuilding front axles of many kinds, the 70f utilizing the tracta type joint, the stub axle should be loose enough to touch the spindle at the spline end, this allows for tolerance when making turns, there should also be in-out play of 1/4 to 1/2 inch for the same reason. too tight ant things will bind. Especially with closed knuckle type axles, smaller (like 44f and 27f) use cardan (cross type u-joints) and the slight eccentric motion makes need for extra clearance.
