Adjusting foot starter switch

So, I purchased a NOS foot starter switch for my MCH-6106. Works great when I mash the button with my hand, but my starter lever will not engage the button to make contact.

The switch clearly has directions that state to 'turn the button left or right to adjust the length'

I'm a decent mechanic, but before I mess this thing up, how in the world do you turn it?? Do you first depress the spring before rotating??
