Losing traction on a grade on ice can be pretty scary, and most people think the brakes are the answer. I suspect they had "all season" tires and not winter tires, causing a loss of traction. If a person was really quick thinking, they might have cranked the wheels hard one way and get pointed downhill. They would have had a little better control then.
