Below is a link to a Youtube video of a gentleman explaining how to create a Flemish Eye.
Making a large eye like he shows is easy. Making a small eye to fit the proper wire rope thimble takes a little more practice. One has to make the eye as small as possible while still being able to just shoehorn the thimble in place. I use a big bench vice and sometimes a pair of Vice Grips that have most of the teeth worn off of the jaws, but I have never had to use a marlin spike.
Using the proper wire rope with a fiber core makes the job a little easier and the cable will lay much better on the winch drum than a cable with a wire core.
If I were using the Crosby cable clamps, I would use three and put the first one as close as possible to the eye and the last one at the very end of the dead horse.
