door latch removal

This photo is taken from inside the door, looking up at the loosened door latch mechanism. The screws have been removed and the latch moves around, but I can't get it out because of the 3/4" C-channel running from the window opening bottom to the about 3/4 of the way down the door jamb, and I am fairly sure it is welded to the jamb. Is that C-channel original? If so, how do you remove the latch mechanism?
