This part:
(does snow covered asphalt or concrete count as a "hard road surface"?)
is what I am actually concerned with. Perhaps my communication skills are not their best?
My truck has VERY worn civilian Goodyear AT's on it and I am husbanding my $ - trying to make as many essential repairs as necessary and put off the hi $ until I have too.
Last night it snowed here - not much by Chicago standards, but I went out to get gas (down to .93/gal) and on the four block trip noticed the difference in handling with about 3 ~ 5" of WET snow immediately. Suddenly it was REAL easy to turn, and stopping felt more like what it did before I had the brakes re-done.
So that prompted me to wonder if I should shift into 4wd before I introduced Fred C. to any of the other folks at the gas station in a way the Insurance Company would not approove of.
I didn't - but I wondered about it. Would it stop easier with the front axle engaged? would "over-steeering" go away? Or would I screw the drive-train up. How much snow does it take before it I am no longer on a hard road surface? Do I have to find out the hard way by waiting for the tires to slip?
