Valve adjustment

I just did my first valve adjustment on my 58 W-100 PW 6 today. What is the best way to tell that I've got them adjusted correctly? I kinda made sure that the gage would slide in but definitly grab the gage as I tried to move it out and move it around. I would like to know what others think about setting these valves and do you think that I might have gotten them to tight? What are the consequences of getting them to tight or to loose? I found that I could not get the feeler gage in any of the gaps without first backing them off. Is this normal? Thanks in advance........
