gas or carb issue just happened

A mile from my house the carb bowl went dry. This happened once about 2 years ago and taking the top off the carb, removing the float and needle valve and putting back together worked until now. This time Removed the stone in the external fuel filter. Glass bowl filled right up. Filled carb bowl with gas and reinstalled needle valve, float and top of carb. Started right up and ran until bowl went dry. Gas is not getting to the bowl. Float is not filled with gas, floats. What to try?
