Lots of V8 swaps. Occasional AOD swaps, too. I think an AMC straight 6 would make a nice swap. But the real trouble is the rest of the drive train is noisy at speed. I mean loud. Ear plug loud. And the cabin on these trucks is not insulated at all. I think there was a leather boot around the shifter.
But at slow speeds, the WDX is quiet and neat to listen to. You can hear the pops and creaks of the whole truck. Very nice.
So to make the highway cruiser enjoyable, you need a different transmission. And a different transfer case. Which is a challenge with the offset differential on the rear axle.
It's all possible. There are lots of trucks to look at for ideas. Some minor swaps and some major transplants.
You will get opinions from both sides of the fence. And valid reasons for doing it or not doing it, too.
It's just not simple. They were designed for a smaller world that moved at a much slower pace than today..
