As Jerry mentioned, they have ball bearings instead of splines, so when they are on, the front axles do not turn, saves wear and tear on differential components when not in use, as well as MPG increase. It takes about 10 minutes to switch between the spline flange to these when you want to 4 wheel. It's a good value if you don't 4 wheel very much.
